SEN

This information is based on  schedule 1 of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Regulations 2014 and paragraphs 6.79-6.81 of the SEND Code of Practice.

All children at The Austen Academy should have an Autism diagnosis and should be working at Age related Expectations in most subjects.

The SEND policy is available to view on the Policies section of the website.

All the children at our school will be supported to move from The Austen Academy to next placement with a structured inclusion.

In Years 10 and 11 this will include taster sessions at local colleges.

As a new school we have focused on employing a team of staff with a range of skills.

Many of our team have experience and additional qualifications in working with Autistic children and young people.  This experience may be in the mainstream or special school sector. We have members of staff with extensive experience of training in ASD strategies.

Class groups are small with a high level of adult support from qualified teachers and Teaching assistants.

The staff have regular training on autism strategies such as Attention Autism, Social stories, Structured Teaching, and behaviour management. The school uses Team Teach as their behaviour management system.   Motional is used as to support emotional health.

Support for improving emotional and social development.

Due to the high adult support available emotional and social development will be included through curriculum timetable. All children will have a Motional assessment to help identify weaker areas in their emotional and social development.

Bullying will not be tolerated at The Austen academy and work will be done with all children to identify any behaviour which could be construed as bullying. As many of the children will have issues with social understanding, this is an area that will be developed in all areas of the school.

The Antibullying policy can be found on the website in the policies section.

The complaints policy can be found on the website in the policies section.
